“Good Company”: A conversation with novelist Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney

When Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s hilarious, bestselling first novel “The Nest” hatched in 2016, it was an instant hit. The novel, which is currently being adapted by AMC Studios as a limited series, tells the story of four siblings who confront middle age – and each other – in their quest to inherit the trust fund (“nest egg”) that they each desperately need. In her second novel, “Good Company,” D’Aprix Sweeney takes a deeper, more personal, look at that life-stage when two middle-aged married couples confront a secret that challenges the lives and relationships they thought they had. Like “The Nest,” “Good Company” hit numerous bestseller lists as soon as it was released in April 2021. For D’Aprix Sweeney, who didn’t publish “The Nest” until she was in her 50’s, seeing that kind of second-novel success is a nice reminder that the readers who flocked to her first novel are hungry for more.
